I read this book in high school in the '70s with concern. Then when the real 1984 came and went, I thought, "Whew, it didn't come to that after all, we made it." The date is not consequential. We as a society are much closer to that world than ever. We are getting closer and closer. I see people (Fox News comes to mind) who take the role of the "Ministry of Truth" revising history as we watch it happen. We are in a constant state of war and our liberties are being taken away. The TV 2-way console in everyone's apartment is the internet connection and "Big Brother" is Google. I'm only slightly kidding. Scary times...

Laura: 1984 is definitely a must-read. Did you know that it's also a banned book?

I read this book a couple of months ago, and I think I didn't quite understand everything that was going on. I definitely think this book is best read for a class or book club, or something that involves discussion with others!

Kris: Hi, glad you did. I didn't understand much of it too. Had to refer to websites that discussed it!

I enjoyed this book too! I'm glad I read it in college though. I doubt I would have really understood it without having discussions about it.
